WHEN DO WE PRACTICE?

SWATeam RACING is a continuous 10-11 week program, beginning the 1st weekend in December and ending the 2nd weekend in February annually - taking into consideration snow conditions.  We expect participants to attend practices and races for the entire 10-11 week program.  WE DO NOT TAKE ANY skier who is skiing in a WEDGE/SNOWPLOW stance.

OUR TRAINING SCHEDULES:

* Saturday and Sunday mornings: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon or early practices beginning @ 7:00 or 7:30am starts on Saturdays and/or Sundays practices as requested by Alpine Valley Resort.

* Tuesday evenings: 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

** Coaches expect the athlete to arrive 15-30 minutes before the start of training so they have enough time to boot up, dress appropriately for the weather and get their gear on. Some time is spent outside doing warm-up exercises. Coaches expect their athletes to be in the lift line before the lifts start up at each practice. A late athlete is a rushed athlete.

SWATeam meets in the "Fairview Cafe" at Alpine Valley. This meeting place could vary depending on the public crowds expected or scheduled by Alpine Valley Resort. Your coach's will notify athletes and parents about alternate meeting places when necessary. The athletes will be asked to store their boot bags, backpacks in a specific area in that building as the room is also open to the public. You will receive those instructions from the coaches.

The same group of coaches and athletes generally stay together for the entire season. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule and occasionally one or more members of a group may be reassigned to better match a group of athletes with similar skill levels. Especially in the entry level programs, we try to group athletes together that are similar in skill level and age.

Let’s talk about equipment and clothing…

Please note it is NOT the responsibility of the SWATeam Coaches to check your child’s equipment, nor should a coach adjust bindings due to liability concerns. Please have your child come to training and races prepared and ready to ski. Have their equipment checked out at a ski shop with certified personnel trained in this area. Have the ski shop technician explain to you how to re-set your child’s bindings. Our coaches are available to assist and guide parents in equipment choices and binding settings. Please feel free to ask your child’s coach for recommendations.

Did you purchase NEW BOOTS for your child this season??

Make sure they fit into the bindings on their skis!!

SKI BOOTS should be well fitted & flexible. Only ONE pair of socks should be worn at a time, bring an extra pair to change into on cold days; wet socks = cold feet!

SKIS with BINDINGS properly set.

HELMETS - ARE MANDATORY! They must be worn for practice and on race day. Helmets should have “hard” shell protection around the ears … NO soft ears!

CLOTHING!

Dress for the weather—it’s winter time!

REMEMBER the temperatures on the chair lift and the ski hill are possibly colder than in your backyard. Layering works best! If you don’t wear it there, bring it along for warmth later. Better to have extra layers instead of standing outside freezing!
